Wine tourism is on the rise and Rioja Alavesa is visited every year by more than 60,000 tourists who come along to taste its prestigious wines. The well-deserved fame of the wines from the area, a Rioja Designation of Origin, is due to the clay-limestone earth, to the location of the vineyards and, above all, to the care and love of those who tend them, combining traditional production with the latest technological innovations. Variety is guaranteed thanks to the 40 wineries belonging to the Rioja Alavesa tourist Wine Route. Visitors therefore have the opportunity to visit wineries packed with history and medieval legends, such as El Fabulista in Laguardia, or to enjoy the titanium design by famous architect Frank Gehry for the Marqués de Riscal winery’s 5-star hotel and spa. Other alternatives for enjoying wine architecture are the discreet work of Azpiazu for Baigorri, winner of wine tourism’s Best of, the famous undulating forms of the Ysios wineries by Santiago Calatrava and the curved walls of Viña Real, work of the French architect, Philippe Mazières. A perfect destination for lovers of wine and wine architecture.
