Today we want to tell you about Elola, a farmhouse surrounded by green fields and trees hundreds of years old in Gipuzkoa, where Euskal Txerri pigs, the only native Basque race, are raised naturally. Pigs, sheep, cows and goats graze on its 54 hectares. A true pleasure for the senses.
Euskal Txerri pigs are recognisable by their short legs, long and droopy ears and black spots around their snout and hindquarters. These pigs live outdoors and forage naturally on beech and oak acorns, chestnuts, hazelnuts and wild grass.
At Hagoos we’ll take you to discover this pretty farmhouse, where its owners will tell you about their pig breeding philosophy. The farmers will explain how they work to preserve biodiversity and replant forests in an environment where the natural cycle of animals is respected, as is the time it takes to mature the products they make using ancient techniques.
You’ll take a stroll through the fields, hear exciting stories and end your visit with a mouth-watering Euskal Txerri snack.
At Hagoos our aim is to give you a closer look at the Basque traditions, culture and gastronomy, guided by the local farmers.
