Vitoria-Gasteiz is the least known of the Basque capitals, holder of the international Biosphere Responsible Tourism certificate as a sustainable tourist destination, a city with heaps of personality, which perfectly combines nature, gastronomy and an exciting medieval past. The city is surrounded by a Green Belt, made up of six large parks you can visit on foot or by bike, where you can enjoy the lakes and a wide variety of birds that stop to rest on their migratory routes.
The city’s old town, known as the Medieval Almond, is perfectly preserved and a faithful reflection of history: 15th century buildings, a wall dating from the 11th century, watchtowers and several mansions boast renaissance architecture. Its famous gothic cathedral, St Mary’s, has served as inspiration for renowned authors including Ken Follett and Toti Martínez de Lezea, and its lanes (Cuchillería, Herrería, Pintorería…) remind us of their bustling activities in days gone by.
Fabulous food and its proximity to Rioja Alavesa with its countless bodegas also make Vitoria a hugely interesting city for tourists.
