Even if this type of tourism was already well known in central Europe, it has gained a lot of importance in Spain in the last years. According to the INE (National Institute of Statics), in 2012 the level of occupancy by places in rural houses rose to 19.81% up to 31.30% during the weekend in the Basque Country, which is a great new for our tourism. Some of the areas with the greatest tourist attraction in Euskadi are the Basque Pyrenees and the coast of Guipuzcoa, but in terms of provinces, the situation is particularly advantageous in Guipuzcoa. It represents one of the largest sources of interest for the rural tourist and there is where the length of stay (2.89 days) even exceeds the average.
The data reveals that the largest number of customers in this region come from Catalonia (94.4%) followed by Madrid (85.2%) and finally from Basque Country (70.4%). On the other hand, the Basque Country is one of the autonomous communities that receives more international travelers, compared the rest of Spain. Among the foreign travelers, the most common nationalities are France (77.8%), Germany (48.1%) and Italy (33.3%).
Rural houses all over the land, natural parks, greenways, traditional farm houses… the Basque Country is a great destination to enjoy unique natural resources and the quietness you are looking for.
But of course nature offers other possibilities. In Euskadi you can also enjoy different hiking and trekking paths, through the coast or through the countryside. If you like biking, there are also many mountain bike routes that both adults and young can discover. Rafting, kayaking… if you are looking for other type of disconnection from the routine, the Basque Country and Navarre are places that you can’t miss.
